5 Tips for Making and Keeping Your Fitness New Year’s Resolution

Tip 1:  Be Specific with your resolution.  Being specific with your resolution will help you define the steps you need to follow in order to obtain your goal.  For instance, if you say I want to lose weight or get in shape, define what that means to you.  Do you want to lose 20 pounds or 10?  What does being in shape me to you; more lean muscle, less body fat, or the ability to climb a flight of stairs without getting winded? 

Tip 2:  Write your Resolution Down.  Once you’ve defined your goal, write it down and put it somewhere that you will see it every day.  Put it on your refrigerator or mirror, in a notebook or on your phone.  Refer to it when you start your day. 

Tip 3:  Make a note as to why you are doing it.  Are you doing it to feel better about yourself?  Are you doing it for your family?  Connecting a greater meaning to your resolution will help you stay on track and keep your resolution.

Tip 4:  Tell a supportive someone.  Find someone that you know will help you in a supportive way and keep you on track.  It could be a family member, friend or someone at the gym.  Telling someone will help to keep you accountable to not only yourself but someone else.

Tip 5: Join a group or get a partner who is also working to keep a New Year’s Resolution. There is STRENGTH in numbers! Studies show that having a workout partner or team will enhance and encourage you to stick with your fitness plan.  Besides the camaraderie, there is a level of accountability that will get you to the gym.
